The Workplace Safety and Health Act (Act No. 9/2023) places legal duties on employers in the Maldives for the safety and health of people at work. For many organisations the question is less what the Act says than where to begin.
Start with what you already do
Most employers already have some safety practice: a fire drill, an induction, a first aid kit. Write down what exists today, who is responsible for it and what records you keep. This gives you a baseline.
Then find your main risks
Walk through each workplace with the people who work there and list what could seriously hurt someone. Boats, jetties, kitchens, plant rooms, ladders and chemicals come up again and again in Maldivian workplaces. Rank them, and deal with the worst first.
Put it in a system
One-off fixes fade. A management system such as ISO 45001 gives you a structure for policy, responsibilities, risk assessment, training, incident investigation and review, so improvements last after the person who championed them moves on.
